The Solution To Crying After Feeding.
Babies often experience discomfort after feeding, and unfortunately, babies can’t tell us what’s wrong. Typically if your baby is feeling uneasy after feeding, they will often become quite fussy or cry.
One way to help alleviate this is by burping them. Burping a baby is a simple process that can help release any trapped air in their stomach and prevent gas and fussiness. Here’s a step-by-step guide for parents on how to burp a baby or even newborn:
Step 1: Choose the Right Position
Firstly, choose a comfortable position for both you and your baby. You can try holding your baby upright against your shoulder with one hand supporting their bottom and the other hand patting or rubbing their back. Or you can lay your baby across your lap with their head slightly elevated.
Step 2: Support Your Baby’s Head
Make sure to support your baby’s head and neck with your hand or arm. You can also use a burping cloth or towel to protect your clothing from any spit-up or drool.
Step 3: Pat or Rub Their Back
Gently pat or rub your baby’s back with a firm and rhythmic motion. You can start with a gentle pat on the lower back and work your way up towards the shoulder blades. Experiment with different patterns and pressure to see what works best for your baby.
Step 4: Try Different Techniques
If patting or rubbing isn’t effective, you can try other techniques such as gently bouncing or rocking your baby, or laying them on their tummy across your lap and rubbing their back. Some babies may also respond to a gentle massage on their tummy or back.
Step 5: Look for Signs of Burping
As you burp your baby, keep an eye out for signs of burping such as a release of air or a change in their behavior. Some babies may let out a small burp, while others may burp multiple times. Once you feel that your baby has burped, you can stop and resume feeding, put them back to sleep, or let them play.
Remember, burping a baby can take a few minutes, and some babies may require more burping than others. If you’re having difficulty getting your baby to burp, don’t worry, it’s normal. You can try again later or speak to your healthcare provider for additional advice.
And always remember to be gentle. We have a lot more strength as adults while babies are tiny.
