Parenting’s biggest challenge with a newborn and even into toddlerhood can be changing a diaper. This guide will help you learn or improve your diaper-changing method.
Changing a diaper can be a messy and nerve-wracking experience, especially if you’re a first-time parent. But don’t worry, with a little practice and patience, you’ll become a diaper-changing pro in no time! After all, it is an essential parenting skill!
Check out this step-by-step guide on how to change a diaper:
Gather Your Supplies
Before you start, make sure you have all the supplies you need within reach. You don’t want to be scrambling for wipes while holding a squirmy baby with a dirty diaper. Setting up an at-home baby change station can help. You’ll need a clean diaper, wipes, diaper cream or baby powder (if necessary), and a changing mat or a towel. You may want your diaper disposal bin close by as well.
Prepare The Changing Area
Lay the changing mat or towel on a flat surface, such as a changing table or bed. Make sure the area is clean and free of any hazards for both yourself and the baby.
Position The Baby
Place the baby on the changing mat or towel, with their head away from you. If the baby is wearing pants, remove them by gently pulling them down. If the baby is wearing a onesie, undo the snaps or buttons at the bottom and lift the fabric away from the baby’s body.
Undo The Dirty Diaper
Open the dirty diaper’s tabs and gently lift the front of the diaper, being careful not to spill any poop or urine. If your little one has made a mess, don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. Just use the front of the diaper to wipe away any excess poop before you discard it. Be sure to fold the diaper in half, so the soiled side is facing inwards.
Clean The Baby
Using wipes, gently clean the baby’s bottom, wiping from front to back. Be sure to clean all the creases and folds in the baby’s skin. If the baby has a rash or irritation, apply diaper cream or baby powder to soothe the skin.
Position The New Diaper
Now for the easy part: put the new diaper on! Slide the clean diaper under the baby’s bottom, with the back of the diaper aligned with the baby’s waistline. The front of the diaper should come up to the baby’s belly button.
Put The New Diaper On The Baby
Bring the front of the diaper up between the baby’s legs, and fasten the tabs securely to the sides of the diaper. Ensure the diaper is snug but not too tight. As a rule of thumb, you should be able to fit two fingers between the diaper and the baby’s skin.
Dress The Baby
If the baby was wearing a onesie, snap or button it back into place. If the baby was wearing pants, put them back on. Be sure to check that the clothing is not too tight or uncomfortable for the baby.
Dispose Of The Dirty Diaper
Wrap the dirty diaper tightly and dispose of it in a diaper pail or trash can. Do NOT flush the dirty diaper down the toilet. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
Changing a diaper can seem like a daunting task, but don’t worry, it gets easier with time and practice. Soon you’ll be a pro at changing diapers, and do it while half asleep!
